It is a solid and long-lasting stone, a material that was well suited to the construction techniques for creating ceilings with the vault technique. In the distant past it was used for the construction of simple vaults (barrel vaults) and subsequently, when engineering skills matured, also for the construction of more complex shapes (corner vaults and square vaults).<br \/>The barrel vault is one of the simplest non-flat roofing systems and represents the first example of stone roofing of living spaces in the Mediterranean area. It is therefore understandable that this type of vault is undoubtedly the most widespread covering in the oldest homes in Salento. Furthermore, it had the advantage of avoiding the use of beams, crosspieces and other stone or wooden products. Its main constituent element is the arch: essentially, the union of several arches along the thickness gives rise to the vault. The barrel vault, therefore, rests directly (and only) on load-bearing walls (stone or masonry). Therefore, due to the way it is structured, the barrel can also withstand significant overloads, does not need to have a limited ratio between length and width and can extend, theoretically, infinitely. In fact, with this type of vault it is possible to cover rooms from the smallest (such as corridors) to the largest (such as cellars) up to large galleries.<br \/>The oldest houses in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cortemanfredi.it\/en\/corte-manfredi-to-discover-salento\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Corte Manfredi<\/strong> <\/a>are those located on the ground floor and these, in fact, are almost all characterized by the presence of barrel vaults. The vaults were painted white, exactly like in the past, with lime, a material that had the dual function of breathing and disinfecting. Finally, it is worth underlining the presence of some rooms (which in the past probably served as small warehouses) with these characteristic vaults, small and of a different height compared to that of the main room: this characteristic today makes them very particular bathrooms (5A, 5B, 6A, 6B).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barrel vault Before describing the barrel vault, let&#8217;s talk about the Lecce stone.
