Monteruga<\/strong> is a small abandoned ghost village<\/strong> (fraction of Veglie) in the heart of Salento<\/strong>, in Puglia<\/strong>. This village was the result of the expansion of the farm of the same name and preserves the authentic charm of the Salento tradition, offering visitors a unique and unforgettable experience.
\nIt is, in fact, a village built during the twenty years of fascism (therefore quite recent) to allow the stay of farmers who moved here to work as labourers, most of whom were employed in agricultural work and in the production of tobacco, oil and wine in the surrounding countryside. Between the 70s and 80s it reached over 800 inhabitants. But then, with the privatization of the agricultural company that managed it in the eighties, Monteruga was completely abandoned. The history of Monteruga as an inhabited center ends forever, but the history of Monteruga as a ghost village begins.
\nThe complete and sudden abandonment, in fact, means that today Monteruga appears just like a ghost town<\/strong>, along whose streets you can enter freely, observing the degradation and desolation that unfortunately characterize it today.
\nAs evidence of a recent past, the accommodation, the rural school, the central square, the church dedicated to Sant’Antonio Abate<\/strong> (celebrated on 17 January with a large procession that crossed the village), the tobacco depot, the barracks, the bowling green, the club (“lu Ralla”, a building still recognizable due to a lunette drawn on the facade). On the walls of the winery there is still the writing that was intended to encourage the workers to work: “Who drinks wine lives longer than the doctor who forbids it<\/em>“.
\nEvery single forgotten element and object is still at the moment it was abandoned! Time seems to have stopped.
\nSo suggestive that some entrepreneurs have thought of creating a tourist village (an undertaking that never materialised) and some writers have written thriller books. It actually looks like a movie scenario. The atmosphere, combined with its particular history, still attracts some curious people today. Visitors who enter find themselves faced with a surreal experience<\/strong>: it seems like a scenario from an old western film: a deserted village surrounded by nothingness: abandoned houses and absolute silence, broken only by the wind.
\nMonteruga, therefore, represents a truly recommended stop for those who want to immerse themselves in the authenticity of Puglia. This small village offers a journey back in time, giving its visitors an evocative experience in the heart of Salento.
\nAlthough far from Corte Manfredi<\/strong><\/a>, Monteruga’s location a short distance from some famous and beautiful beaches of northern Salento (Porto Cesareo<\/strong>, Torre Lapillo<\/strong>) makes it a magical place to visit to explore an unknown and decadent side of Salento.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
