In <strong>Salento<\/strong> and other areas of <strong>Puglia<\/strong>, the prickly pear has found ideal climatic conditions, becoming an integral part of the rural landscape.<br \/>\nThe plant, in fact, has spread rapidly thanks to its resistance to drought and its ability to adapt to arid and infertile soils and it is possible to see it growing spontaneously throughout Puglia, particularly in the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto where the dry stone walls and the countryside are often dotted with these large thorny bushes.<br \/>\nThe fruit of the prickly pear has been used for centuries in the Apulian culinary tradition. Its fruits \u2013 yellow, red or orange \u2013 are consumed fresh, used to produce jams, liqueurs and syrups. They are rich in fiber, vitamins and antioxidants. Furthermore, the blades of the plant (cladodes) can be cooked and consumed as a vegetable, although this use is less widespread than consuming the fruit.<br \/>\nHowever, these are plants and fruits studded with small thorns, so &#8220;cleaning&#8221; is often laborious and requires a certain amount of skill and patience.<br \/>\nA little-known part of the prickly pear is its use in the textile sector. Vegetable fiber from the blades is obtained from the plant, used to produce ecological fabrics. This process is part of a movement to rediscover and enhance sustainable materials in fashion and design. Finally, the prickly pear also has an artistic and decorative value.
