What are courtyard houses?
They are ancient and humble Salento dwellings usually consisting of one or two rooms. So called because they were brought together and united by a single outdoor space, the courtyard, in which the main activities of life in the past took place. In each courtyard there was always a well (from which to draw water) and a stone washhouse (pila) where women washed clothes. Several families even lived in each small house in the courtyard! Today, these humble dwellings with their typical barrel or star vaults, stone fireplaces and beautiful mosaics have been expertly restored.
Modernly designed furniture has completed the restoration, making Corte Manfredi a unique structure.
